The arrival of warm weather also means the arrival of rodents. Mice and rats can be unpleasant to have around your home, which is why you need to be proactive about protecting your home against rodents, especially if they are an issue in the area where you live.

Deep Clean Your Kitchen

Your kitchen is one of the most actively used parts of your home, especially if you eat or prepare multiple meals a day in your kitchen. In the busy rush of life, it is easy to just wipe down the counters and call it good.

This spring, though, you need to invest some times in deep cleaning your kitchen. That means taking everything out of your cupboards and cleaning the inside of your cupboards as well as the doors of your cupboards. Get down and clean the floorboards and undersides of your cabinets.

Pull out your fridge and clean all sides of the fridge, as well as the area where the fridge was stored. Pull out your oven and clean around it as well. Clean the inside of your oven and all the other appliances in your kitchen.

As you deep clean your kitchen, you are going to discover lots of hidden spots where food scraps are hiding out. Getting rid of any hidden sources of crumbs will help make your kitchen less appealing to rodents.

Rethink Your Food Storage

Rodents thrive where there is a food source, which is why you need to rethink your food storage. Make sure that all your open food, such as cereal, sugar, flour, etc. is not just stored inside of the containers that they came in. Rolling up the top of the plastic bag on the cereal is not going to keep rodents out. Invest in storage containers for all these items or move these open items into your fridge.

The same goes for open containers of chips, crackers, and cookies. If possible, transfer these items to a more stable and secure food storage situation. The harder it is to get into your food, the less likely you are going to need to deal with rodents as well as ants messing up your kitchen.

Seal up Any Cracks

As you work on deep cleaning your kitchen, keep an eye out for cracks. You may find little gaps of space between your cabinets and the floor, for example, or maybe there is some open space around where the gas lines come into your kitchen and connects to your stove. Or perhaps there is a little open space around your patio door. Rodents are able to squeeze through very tiny places, so sealing up these spaces is another step towards keeping your kitchen rodent-free.

Protect your kitchen from rodents this spring with a good deep clean. Once you are done deep cleaning, work on securing any food you don't keep in your fridge. Finally, seal up any openings that could help rodents get into your home. For further assistance, work with a rodent control service to keep your home safe.
