The great thing about aquariums is the fact that they can be repurposed when no longer being used for keeping fish. Since most aquariums are large and already have a stand, there's no need to move them or find an additional space to display them. Aquariums can become the focal point of any room when you use a little creativity in repurposing them.

Create a candle display

If you want to add a dramatic display of ambiance to a room, you can create a candle garden in your aquarium. You will want to clean the aquarium thoroughly, inside and out, before you start. This will allow the light to reflect well.

Add a layer of decorative stone to the bottom a few inches deep. Consider the color of your candles and contrast the stone color with the candles for the best appearance. For instance, white stone will work well with colored candles and dark- to medium-colored stone should be used with white or off-white candles.

Using battery-operated candles with timers is best, as you won't have to disturb your arrangement to turn the candles off and on each day. Use candles in varying widths and heights to achieve the best look. You can also add some decorative accents around the candles if desired, such as seashells or small silk flowers or greenery.

Create a fairy garden

Fairy gardens add the perfect touch of whimsy to a room and are a great project to make with children. Place gravel in the bottom of the tank for drainage and add several inches of potting soil on top of the stone if you want to grow plants directly in the tank.

Use a combination of herbs and succulents. Any small plant will work. Another option is to use small potted plants instead of planting them directly in the tank. This makes it easier to experiment with different looks.

Take a small spoon and create garden paths throughout your fairy garden. Let the children help you decorate with miniature houses, figurines, and other small accent pieces. You can change the miniature items to match the seasons or to celebrate specific holidays.

Create a greenhouse in your kitchen

Aquariums can be used to grow a variety of herbs for cooking. Layer the aquarium with several inches of drainage stone. Make sure your aquarium is in a location where it gets adequate sunlight for best results.

Add small pots of your favorite herbs to create a kitchen greenhouse. Purchase decorative plant stakes to make identifying your herbs easy. Decorate empty spaces around the pots with miniature garden signs, watering cans, or seed packets.

If you have an old aquarium around your house, you have a great decorative item to use in your home. Whether you turn it into a candle display, fairy garden, or kitchen greenhouse, your old aquarium can become a lovely addition to any room.
