One thing that would add personality to a country kitchen is antique American stoneware. There are many reproductions of pieces created in the 18th and 19th centuries. If you're ok with buying those reproductions, go for it. However, if you are wanting to invest in real American history, look for the real thing. Besides finding items that have a story to tell, you'll have the pleasure of buying things that are truly made in America. And, while you're at it, look for other antiques to add to your country kitchen.
Antique American Stoneware
Think of buying stoneware pieces that you can put to good use. Besides being really beautiful, Antique American stoneware is sturdy, so don't be afraid to use it every day.
For instance, think of buying stoneware nested bowls. The smallest bowl might be a great place to beat a single egg. Later you might use the same small bowl as a serving bowl for things like olives and gherkins. The largest of the nested bowls will be useful for mixing up the ingredients for pancakes. Later you can use it to serve the fresh fruit that will accompany the pancakes.
Look for antique stoneware pitchers too. Find the ones that have primitive hand-painted pictures on them done in cobalt blue. You also might find a set of pitchers that shows the likeness of a man, another one that has a woman on it, and yet a third one with a child's likeness on it. You can use the pitchers for things like orange juice, ice water, and pancake syrup. Or, put your wooden spoons, spatulas, and other kitchen items in the pitchers.
You might be lucky enough to find very unique antique American pieces. For example, you might buy a jar that has the word Anchovis as part of the design. Obviously, you don't have to use the stoneware jar for actual anchovies. Instead, it might be used to hold pretty flowers.
Part of the fun of owning antique American stoneware is that you will probably want to always keep your eyes open for new pieces. Since they are so sturdy, they will probably become family heirlooms with your own family history behind them.
